Povinnost sčítání ukládá zákon o myslivosti a pravidelná kontrola stavů je nutná pro hospodaření v honitbách, neboť na základě údajů o počtech zvěře se sestavují plány lovu. V roce 2016 bylo na Vysočině mimo jiné zaznamenáno přes 28 tisíc kusů srnčí zvěře, přes 3 200 divokých prasat a téměř 24 tisíc zajíců. Z ptáků jsou nejpočetnější divoké kachny (více než 12 tisíc kusů) a bažanti (7 176).
